food

Look who got a new haircut.  This is also serves as Gaius' monthly picture at 64 months.

bangs like Ben-10

super duper cute
I took Gaius to Hair du Temps in centre ville (downtown) for his first French haircut.  He sat in the shampoo chair for the very first time and really loved it.  Yesterday was Wednesday so there was no school.  We love Wednesdays.  After the haircut, we went to the post office to pick up a care package from my mother in law, Jackie.  Then we went to visit Christopher at CNRS.

Mother-in-law in French is "belle mere" or "beautiful mother."  Nice, huh?  Jackie sent me a box of specially requested completely American foods.  It's amazing what I find myself missing.  Instant pudding?  Who knew?  Taco mix?  The Mexican food situation here is very desperate.  I did make some pretty decent pico de gallo and fish tacos last week.  If you come to visit me, please bring Mexican food.

the things we miss (Goldfish crackers not shown)
Gaius and I are still getting over colds.  I've been giving him lots of tea in his brand new "coffee" cup.

"coffee"
Now, when Gaius wants tea he asks me for "coffee" and makes the little quotation marks with his fingers.  It's the cutest thing I've ever seen.  Much cuter than when Joey did it on "Friends."

Speaking of coffee, I finally found some cream for my coffee.  It's not exactly what I'm used to, but definitely something I can live with.

evaporated milk!
There is this cheese that I bought on a whim awhile ago.  If I had given the name even one moment of thought, I obviously would never  have purchased it.

cheese from a boy?
Hello?  Earth to Heather!  Boy (billy) goats don't make milk.  What in the heck is this cheese made from then?  Please, I don't even want to know.  The funny thing is, Christopher actually likes this cheese.  YUCK!

I went to the open air market in centre ville today.  I visited my favorite fish guy, the one who looks like Jean Christophe Novelli.  Scallops were on sale.  Such beautiful scallops!  Still in the shell, with the scary orange part still stuck on there.  The fish guy gave me a very simple recipe for Coquilles St. Jacques and that's what I'm making for dinner tonight.  I purchased the creme fraiche straight from the cheese guy.  It's not the prepackaged stuff.  This is stuff straight from the dairy farm.  It's going to be delicious.  I'll try to remember to take a photo!  I'm having a lot of fun shopping at the open air market.  The vendors are starting to recognize me as a regular and I'm becoming more comfortable trying out new foods.

That's it for today.  A bientôt!
